Bonds of 5: Building a Wall

11.1 Subtraction Building A Wall

Mathematics

Develop the concept of using bonds of 5 in subtraction equations, expressed verbally.

Scaffolding: arrange the blocks

In the core activity the goal is to build one of each bond. Players can, but are not supposed to, build the same bond more than once. Students can be prevented from building repeated bonds by giving each player their own pile of blocks:

  • Each player needs one of each block from 1 to 5, placed in a jumbled pile, in front of them.
  • Play as per the core game.
  • Play for 3 minutes. The player who places the most number of blocks wins.
Working Memory Support: build a wall

Build a wall of 5 that requires students to use the commutative property of addition to identify two-part bonds. Use one of each block from 1 to 5. Keep this on the game board whilst playing. The bond wall is a visual to support students with working memory difficulties. Using the bond wall helps to free up the working memory to focus on applying the bond.
