Locate 1, 2, 3, 5, 9
Some students benefit from learning to locate numbers to 10 in two stages. First, students learn to locate the numbers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9. Whilst they are learning these numbers, write 4, 6, 7 and 8 on the write and wipe sleeve using a dry erase marker. This will reduce the cognitive load. Students focus on learning to locate:
- 1, 2 and 3 by seeing without counting
- 5 as the middle
- 9 as one before 10
Numbers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9 need to be learnt first. Then students can move onto locating 4, 6, 7 and 8.
Locate 4, 6, 7, 8
Once students are fluent locating 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9 without counting from one they can move onto learning to locate 4, 6, 7 and 8. Whilst they are learning these numbers, write 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9 on the write and wipe sleeve using a dry erase marker. This will reduce the cognitive load. Students focus on learning to locate:
- 4 as one before 5
- 6 as one after 5
- 7 and 8 by counting on from 5
Once students are fluent locating 4, 6, 7 and 8 they can complete the core activity as is, without additional numbering.
