Build your capacity to lead Bond Blocks Core Kit implementation in your school.
Suitable for:
- Classroom Teachers of Years 1 to 3.
- Classroom Teachers of Years 4 to 6 who have students who add and subtract using their fingers.
- Intervention Teachers and Education Assistants who support students with difficulties in maths.
- Numeracy Leaders looking for a whole school approach in maths.
This day is targeted to those who have started using the Core Kit and want to learn more. However, there are no pre-requisites for this session. There will be a brief review of some of the information from “Introducing Bond Blocks Core Kit PL” (level 1) but most of the day is new content.
PL Outline:
- Response-To-Intervention framework.
- Research: Characteristics of students who are at risk in maths.
- Theory: Concrete-Representational-Abstract approach
- Theory: Connecting Mathematical Language
- Theory: Explicit teaching and a Sequenced Curriculum
- Activity Boards from the Bonds of 10 and Ten Plus Bonds chapters
- Detailed look at the Placement Test, Monitoring Tools and whole-school tracking sheets.
- In depth focus on Implementation and Planning
- Time will be allocated for you to ask questions, explore the resources and network with others.
Specialising in the Bond Blocks Core Kit:

An in depth look into how to solve addition and subtraction word problems from the Bond Blocks Core Kit
Leverage your Core Kit for advanced teaching in word problems.
Suitable for:
- Classroom teachers, Intervention Teachers and Education Assistants who use Core Kit who want specialised knowledge in this difficult to teach area.
- Classroom teachers from Years 1 to 3 who do not have the Core Kit* but want to learn how to teach addition and subtraction word problems in a pedagogically sound and mathematically correct way.
- Numeracy Leaders looking for a whole school approach to solving addition and subtraction word problems.
*There are no pre-requisites for this PL. You can attend even if you don’t have the Bond Blocks Core Kit. However, if you do this, please be aware that you will take away lots of knowledge about how to teach word questions but no actual questions to use in your class. The student questions are part of the Bond Blocks Core Kit. However, by the end of the session you will be able to write your own!
PL Outline:
- Approaches that don’t work when solving word problems. This includes the ‘key word approach’ where key words are matched to a single operation.
- Comprehension of word problems using a bar model
- POLYA’s approach to problem solving

- Comparison structured word problems
