7) Number After: Number Track

Counting Forwards 1 to 10

71.1 Near Ten Strategy 9

Mathematics

  • Develop fluency identifying the number after, for numbers up to 10.

Language

  • one longer
  • one more than (later introduce ‘one greater than’)
  • one number after

Differentiation

A little easier

Player One

The student who needs support plays as Player One. They say the number after first. By going first they can see Player Two’s number track and use this to help them identify the number after. This is not ‘cheating’. It supports students to move on from always counting starting at one.

A little harder

Player Two

The student who needs extending plays as Player Two. When it is Player Two’s turn to close their eyes, Player One uses:

  •  a piece of A4 paper folded in half to screen the rest of Player One’s Number Track and
  • their hand to screen Player Two’s numbers after (as per normal play).
